New Flooring: What to expect

Atomic Construction is a family–owned business, and we’re consumers and homeowners just like you. The big difference is we’ve done hundreds and hundreds of installs over the years and – boy, oh boy – the things we’ve seen under floors. This guide was created to give you some insight into our process and what to expect in best case or not–so–best–case scenarios.

FLEXIBILITY: A gold-medal PERFORMANCE

0K, we’re not asking for any backflips, just a little flexibility in your schedule. 0nce we set a date for your installation, we will provide the status on your material delivery and work as hard as we can to meet your dates. With any material being shipped, delays are always possible.

FLOOR REMOVAL: IT’S CALLED “DEMO” FOR A REASON

We understand this is your home. Know that we take all steps to keep the dust and damage to a minimum. However, there is no such thing as “dust free” demolition. It will be messy, dusty and annoying. If this is of particular concern to you almost “dust free”demolition is available through specialized companies but will cost significantly more money. We highly recommend you move or cover items you do not want to get dusty, and of course we will do our best!

WHAT’S UNDER THERE? WE’VE FOUND PLENTY OF GREMLINS

The phase“swept under the rug”came from somewhere, right? There is no way to tell what gremlins may live under your current flooring until it is removed. We have found additional layers of tile, wood, sheet vinyl, unusual glues and adhesives, cracks, moisture and leveling issues in the past. We don’t mean alarm you – just want to be transparent and upfront as we don’t like surprises any more than you do. Any and all costs will be addressed upon discovery.

NEW FLOORING & BASEBOARDS: THEY GO TOGETHER LIKE PB & JELLY

Removing baseboards is one of the first steps and replacing them is one of the last – they’re a critical component to a “finished” look. Your existing baseboards may have taken a lot of abuse and may not look so hot once we remove the flooring – sometimes the MDF (think of glued together saw dust) just falls apart and there’s nothing we can do to save it. Your new floors may also be a different height exposing paint issues on your walls. We recommend fresh new baseboards to accentuate your new flooring and upgrade your home – at our great pricing! New baseboards are usually just primed white when installed and are N0T painted unless you have contracted for it. They will look beautiful when caulked and painted but will not look finished with primer alone.

PLUMBING: WE GO WITH THE FLOW

While we may be removing and replacing toilets or washers and dryers you may need to hire a plumber (or DIY) in the event valves or other hardware is not in working order. 0FTEN valves will crack or break when removing due to their condition – has nothing to do with us – the stuff just rusts and degrades over time. While somewhat common, it is generally a minor expense. Again, just want you to be aware of possible plumbing issues upfront.

PERSONAL STUFF: YOUR SECRETS ARE SAFE WITH US

We’re not interested in your diary – just want to keep your important possessions in one piece. We D0 move furniture when part of the estimate. However, we don’t move heirlooms, figurines other nick knacks, pianos, large game tables, safes, artwork or connect/disconnect electronics. This is for your protection as well. PLEASE make sure all your personal belongings have been moved prior to our arrival.

END OF PROJECT: TIDY VS. MR. CLEAN

Who wants to be told they have an ugly baby? N0T US ! We take pride in our work and want to make sure you are left with a beautiful, complete, clean project. Please understand our crews are professional, neat and tidy but are N0T professional housekeepers. This is major construction and even after debris is removed, floors are cleaned and we are all packed up, you may wish to do a whole house cleaning.
